The graphic novel Maus by Art Spiegelman is an incredible teaching resource for various reasons: the literary merit, the clever use of visuals, the historical importance, and the opportunities for valuable discussions and assessments are limitless. It is a biographical story-within-a-story that explores the hardships of the Jewish people during the Holocaust. I used it with Writer’s Craft, the grade 12 creative writing course in Ontario, but it could also be used in grade 11 or 12 core English classes. The students thoroughly enjoyed the experience. And it was a great time for me too!
